Hot Streak

So since I last covered the Boston Breakers, these ladies have been on quite a tear, winning three straight games in July, culminating with Sunday’s 2-1 win over the Washington Freedom.

This was a pretty fun game, with the Breakers outplaying the Freedom for the most part, getting it done with a strong possession game, solid passing and excellent movement off the ball — just the kind of technical soccer I like to see! And definitely a far cry from the long-ball fest I covered at the Revolution a few weeks ago.

Here’s a few from the Breakers’ convincing win Sunday:

World Cup, This Is Not

Maybe I’ve been spoiled by all the World Cup coverage, but it’s staggering to see the difference between the levels of play in the MLS — the top flight of American soccer — and the premier international tournament.

Last night, I was dispatched down to Foxboro to cover the return of the MLS season after their so-called “World Cup” break, photographing the matchup between the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution. It was just relentless long ball after long ball into the box with little discipline or creativity on the part of the players. Very frustrating to watch as someone who’s been playing this game his whole life.

Here are some photos from the game, which the Fire won, 1-0.

Manny Being Manny

Manny Ramirez.

Everybody in Boston knows who this guy is. They also know how much of a doofus he is, too. But, man, could he hit.

I was tasked with covering the former Red Sox great’s first trip back to Fenway since the Sox traded him to the Dodgers back in 2008. It was no big surprise why they did it — he was generally regarded as a clubhouse cancer toward the end of his time in Boston — so it was going to be interesting to see what the crowd reaction would be when he returned. Though it probably didn’t help things that he made some disparaging comments around Boston on his way out…

Here’s my Manny photo gallery, because let’s face it, it’s not like anything really matters when the prodigal force behind two World Series championships comes back to town.

6.18.2010 — BOSTON — Former teammates David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez joke around during batting practice at Fenway Park on June 18, 2010. It was Ramirez' first game back since being traded by the Red Sox in 2008.

Wake Up

Watching a knuckleballer can quickly become a lesson in how things can go from being very good to very bad in a very short amount of time. Take Tim Wakefield, for instance. Sunday was the second game in a row where I got to see Wakefield’s otherwise decent pitching performance get done in by a single big inning.

Here’s a quick run down in photos of the day’s action.

6.13.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia gets taken off his feet by Phillies second baseman Chase Utley after turning a double play to end a bases-loaded jam in the first inning on June 13, 2010.

6.13.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox starting pitcher Tim Wakefield pitches to the Phillies in the first inning on June 13, 2010.

6.13.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre pouts after striking out and stranding two men against the Phillies in the seventh inning on June 13, 2010.

6.13.2010 — BOSTON — Phillies shortstop Juan Castro gets his double play attempt broken up by Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez in the sixth inning on June 13, 2010.

Batting Practice

Baseball, oh how I’ve missed you!

Last night I spent my evening shooting the Red Sox as they completely embarrassed the Angels in a 17-8 rout. Unfortunately, blowouts like that are about as exciting as shooting batting practice. When the outcome of the game is virtually a lock, it’s pretty obvious the players are going through the motions — especially when the game time clocks in around 4.5 hours. Sheesh.

Here’s about as vanilla of a take as you’ll see from a ball game. But them’s the breaks, as always.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox left fielder Bill Hall is greeted at home by center fielder Darnell McDonald, left, after driving in Adrian Beltre, right, on a 2-run home run against the Angels on May 3, 2010.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox right fielder J.D. Drew tracks his RBI single in the fourth inning against the Angels on May 3, 2010.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Bucholz pitches in the first inning against the Angels on May 3, 2010.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre smiles after looking at the replay of his 2-run home run against the Angels on May 3, 2010.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox designated hitter Mike Lowell is greeted in the dugout after scoring against the Angels in the seventh inning against the Angels May 3, 2010.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia tags out Angels third baseman Maicer Izturis in the fifth inning on May 3, 2010.

Of course, in the grand scheme of important games last night, the Red Sox take the rare spot as bottom of the sports totem pole. Bruins 3, Flyers 2. Of course, by this point in the game, most of the fans were probably at home or the bar across the street watching this on TV.

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — A Fenway Park scoreboard operator changes the score to reflect the Bruins-Flyers playoff game result on May 3, 2010.

And here is easily the best moment I got all night — Duff Goldman. The Ace of Cakes! Super nice guy, especially when his producer yelled at me for having the audacity to exist in the background of her “reality show.”

5.3.2010 — BOSTON — Ace of Cakes host Duff Goldman celebrates after throwing out the first pitch at Fenway Park on May 3, 2010.

Breaking In

I haven’t shot soccer in a few years — been playing a hell of a lot more than photographing, that’s for sure. It’s easily my favorite sport after baseball, but being stateside, opportunities to photograph the world’s game are few and far between.

Here’s a few from the recently revived Women’s Professional Soccer league, featuring the hometown Boston Breakers and the visiting Chicago Red Stars. A frustrating loss for the Breakers, who were blanked, 2-0, by the then-winless Red Stars.

5.1.2010 — BOSTON — Boston Breakers midfielder Kristine Lilly fights for possesion with Chicago Red Stars midfielder Formiga in Chicago's 2-0 on May 1, 2010.

5.1.2010 — BOSTON — Breakers goalkeeper Ashley Phillips and defender Kasey Moore react after CHicago striker Cristiane, dancing in back, scored Chicago's second goal in their 2-0 win on May 1, 2010.

Green Monsters

While the rest of the city had their minds set on Opening Night between the Red Sox and Yankees across town, it might have been easy to forget about the Celtics. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played, just in case anyone forgot.

The Celts have been trying to right the ship, as it were, trying to shake off the memory of a few crushing losses in their current six-game homestand — no easy task, with King LeBron James in town with the Cavaliers. The hometown team eventually pulled off the much-needed win, but it sure as hell wasn’t pretty — they ended up squeaking by, 117-113, after blowing a 22-point lead.

A playoff-caliber finish, and if the chippiness between the teams was any indication, the postseason should be quite exciting should they meet again. Here’s a few scenes from the game, with a looser edit available for viewing and licensing in my archive gallery.

4.4.2010 — BOSTON — Boston Celtics center Kendrick Perkins nails a dunk against the Cleveland Cavaliers at the TD Garden. The Celtics won, 117-113.

4.4.2010 — BOSTON — Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, center, goes up for a loose ball against Cleveland Cavaliers forwards Antawn Jamison, left, and J.J. Hickson at the TD Garden. The turnover from the Cavaliers led to a Celtics possession for the final 3.7 seconds of the game, as they won 117-113.

Green Energy

Finally got around to photographing my first pro basketball, making my way over to the TD Garden for the Herald. The Celtics took on the Raptors, playing some sloppy, physical ball on their way to a 103-96 victory over their Canadian opponents.

Here’s some pics from the game, and a little PhotoShelter flash gallery.
