Work. Progress.

Here’s a quick portrait from a Boston Herald assignment yesterday. I was sent to Dorchester to get a photo of Lewis Finfer, whose father helped build a wall down by the Neponset River near the Milton-Dorchester border as part of the Works Progress Administration of the Great Depression.

Well, with this recession and job loss continuing, you get the idea… Lew is headed to Washington next week to talk jobs with President Obama.

12.12.2009 — BOSTON — Massachusetts Communities Action Network director Lew Finfer's father worked on the wall along Medway and Ventura Streets in Dorchester as part of a Work Progress Administration project from 1939 to 1940. Finfer will be meeting with President Barack Obama next week to discuss the potential for another WPA-like program, among other solutions, to spur job creation.

Miami at Boston College Hoops

Basketball is easily my second favorite sport to shoot, behind baseball of course. I got back into the swing of things today, covering the ACC opener between undefeated Miami and Boston College. It was a pretty active game on the floor, with a lot of steal attempts and loose balls. Not a whole lot happening in the lane, though, at least on my end.

Here’s some photos from the game:

Turkey Day

I’ve been doing this journalism thing long enough to know that if I’m working on Thanksgiving, I’ll probably be photographing some football or people helping the less fortunate. For me, I hit the jackpot and got assigned to do both for the Boston Herald.

First stop was Boston’s Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter and resource center in the South End. I stopped by as they were preparing their annual Thanksgiving Feast and met some of the best people.

I couldn’t stick around for very long, though, as I had to book it cross-town to shoot the second half of the Boston English-Boston Latin football game at Harvard Stadium (VERY thankful traffic is light in Boston on Thanksgiving) . The English-Latin rivalry is the oldest continuous high school football rivalry in the nation, beginning in 1887. It’s been dominated by Latin, and this year was no different, with Latin pulling off the win with neither team bringing any type of passing game whatsoever (read: this game went by FAST).

Here’s to being thankful I still get paid to do this!

More Volleyball

I had the pleasure of getting to photograph the MIAA Division II state volleyball championships for the Boston Herald at my alma mater yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised — Algonquin Regional High School turned out to be easily the most photo-friendly high school venue I’ve ever been to. Thanks to all the new construction that happened after I graduated, the gym is now a brightly lit palace with windows all around and nice clean backgrounds throughout.

But that’s hardly important, because the real action happened on the volleyball court between Bourne and Medfield. Thanks to the decent light (at least while the sun was up), I got plenty of great action as Medfield dominated on their way to a 3-0 win for their second straight DII championship.

Volleyball Shots

In what seems to be a recurring theme lately, I shot another sport today that I haven’t shot in quite a long time — volleyball. Of all the sports, volleyball is one of the hardest to photograph. The ball moves wicked fast, and you really have no idea where the hell it’s going. It’s a lot of guesswork, for sure, but you can sometimes get into a rhythm and make some nice shots, provided you’re not shooting in a dimly lit high school gym… like I was.

Anyway, here are some photos from the MIAA Division 3 North volleyball final between Lynnfield and the Academy of Notre Dame. Notre Dame won, 3-2.

Pale White Guys of America, rejoice!

I guess it was only a matter of time before I got caught up in all this Twilight hoopla. One of the agencies that represents some of my work called me last night to check out a publicity appearance at the Natick Collection Mall from actor Kellen Lutz, who plays one of the vampire dudes in the Twilight movies. To say the least, for all you pale white guys of America, your time has come!

Thousands of tween girls screaming at the tops of their lungs, crying after getting a high five from some pale white guy — all the hysteria you’d expect from the latest fad, I guess.

To see all of the images from my complete take, which are available for licensing, check out my archive site. Here’s an abbreviated take:

No shoes in November!?

Sometimes, the weather just makes my job way too easy, and downright unfair. It hit 68 degrees today in Boston — the average is 43.

As expected, the task of the day was to go out and get some weather features and show people enjoying the warm temperatures. In this first one, I didn’t even notice that the young woman, Sara, was barefoot until my edit!

And of course, I wasn’t the only one out there trying to make some art on this gorgeous fall day. This Mass Art student decided to set up shop right in the middle of a pristine patch of leaves, in the good light, of course.

A Prep Portrait

Had a pretty busy week for the Herald, with two days packed with assignments. Here’s a few portraits I made Wednesday, when the downpours kept the profiled high school football player, Jared Gauthier of Dracut High, inside for film sessions instead of live action. Here’s a link to the story

This is what I came away with after a few minutes in a stanky locker room and some malfunctioning equipment!

Beach weather

As I alluded to in my last post, I was in Pensacola, Fla., a few weeks ago for the wedding of two of my best friends, the new Mr. and Mrs. PJ Cheng!

Anyway, thanks to another friend of ours, we were all set up in some awesome suites along Pensacola Beach, which allowed for some pretty cool quasi-aerial photos of the beach from our balconies. It’s too bad the weather was so cold — it was warmer in Boston when I got back — otherwise, it would have been perfect for such a beautiful location.

Here’s a shot I got after waking up the morning after the wedding.
