Softball State Champs

Continuing with my high school sports marathon day from Saturday, here’s a selection of photos from the MIAA Division 2 Softball championship between Hudson and Stoneham. It wasn’t exactly a close game, but what put Hudson ahead was their defense, which always makes for good photos.

There was also some interesting backstories on this team, too, from the starting pitcher celebrating her birthday and the catcher hitting her first career home run.

Lacrosse State Champs!

It was a big weekend in Worcester for the MIAA spring sports state finals, namely softball and lacrosse. I always enjoy photographing these events, especially at the high school level where the enthusiasm is genuine and the access is phenomenal. I always get a lot of requests from parents for prints, too, which is just some icing on the cake and little beer money in my pocket.

Beautiful weather, plenty of sun (my farmer’s tan proves it), and good action made for a rewarding, albeit hectic (covered three games for the Herald), afternoon.

Here’s a selection from the MIAA Division 1 Lacrosse championship:

Spiked

Being so busy lately means that there’s no shortage of material for me to put up here. The flip side is that it’s hard to time to post anything in a timely manner.

For example, here’s a few images from last week’s MIAA boys state volleyball playoffs, pitting neighboring rivals Newton South against Needham.

5.27.2010 — NEWTON, Mass. — Newton South's Brooks Remy (20) tries to block a spike from Needham's Ross Burdett in the South Sectional Semi-Finals on May 27, 2010. Newton South won, 3-2.

5.27.2010 — NEWTON, Mass. — Newton South's Josh Horenstein tries to spike the ball past Needham's Sam Rubin (7) and Ryan Hagan (21) in the South Sectional Semi-Finals on May 27, 2010. Newton South won, 3-2.

Outfield Assist

Hectic day running around town for the Herald yesterday, but at least I got to wrap it up with some time at the ballpark, aka my happy place. Sure, I got there late — a stakeout tied me up for much of the afternoon — but it was low scoring, with some good defense to make things interesting for the few innings I did get to see.

Here’s how you perform an outfield assist, by the way.

6.3.2010 — CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Tewksbury catcher Lauren Teixeira tags out Arlington Catholic pinch runner Jessica Cameron at home in Arlington's 1-0 win over Tewksbury at St. Peter's Field in Cambridge on June 3, 2010.

Not really a relevant picture, since Arlington Catholic won, 1-0, but great action, nonetheless.

Hands Up

An outtake from a high school volleyball assignment I shot today.

For the record, I have never claimed to be good at photographing volleyball!

Soft-Ballers

Happiness for me is hanging out next to the baseball field, in case you couldn’t tell from my sports portfolio. But the next best thing is softball, because it’s basically the same sport, but on a much smaller field with less reaction time.

This photo is from a game I shot yesterday between Bishop Fenwick High School and St. Mary’s. The player sliding in to home, Kristina Burri, is my kind of player — basically being a pain in the butt, baiting and taunting the catcher to try for a pickoff every time she got on base. Reminds me of myself!

4.7.2010 — PEABODY, Mass. — St. Mary's second baseman Kristina Burri scores on a wild pitch from Bishop Fenwick's Alyssa Begin, right, and an off-target toss from catcher Amanda McInnis in St. Mary's 9-3 at Fenwick.

Burri also scored from first on a throwing error as she was stealing second, without a play at home (which wasn’t a very interesting picture). Gotta love the team speed!

Madness

It shouldn’t be much surprise to know that at this time of year, basketball is something that I get to photograph quite often. They don’t call it March Madness for nothing, after all.

Here are some photos from the second round of the MIAA High School Boys basketball playoffs, featuring a matchup between North Reading and Wayland.

A Rivalry

Here’s a benefit of being a photojournalist in the community where you grew up. Last Monday, I photographed a playoff basketball game involving my alma mater, Algonquin Regional High School, and our rivals, Westborough, for the MetroWest Daily News. (My contract with MWDN has a 1-week digital embargo, hence the late post).

Despite having a hapless ref trip over me in the beginning — an occupational hazard, but still better than that time I had my foot crushed by Glen “Big Baby” Davis — it was a phenomenal game with ARHS coming out on top to advance. They ended up getting knocked out the next round, but it was nice to see ARHS pull off the upset.

2.22.2010 — WESTBOROUGH, Mass. — Algonquin guard Bobby Reynolds (12), with Kyle Whitney (15), screams out beating Westborough in their MIAA Central Mass Division 1 first-round matchup on Feb. 22, 2010. Algonquin won, 37-36.
