Zoo-Mass

I’ve gotten pretty far behind in my updates, but at last glance on my calendar, apparently I’ve been working 18 straight days without a day off. That should count for something, eh?

So, better get back on the horse, as they say.

My epic stretch run of assignments started off a few weeks ago in Amherst, Mass., where I was dispatched to cover the media practices for the University of Massachusetts – Amherst football team for the Boston Herald.

With the start of the college football season looming at the end of the week, I figured posting a few relevant images would be appropriate.

The DREAMers

Last week I picked up an assignment to cover a teach-in rally at the Massachusetts State House in support of the DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act — my very first assignment for The New York Times. The Times was working on a story on undocumented immigrant students and wanted to take a look at the broader DREAM Act movement from a national standpoint, and Boston happened to be the headquarters of one of the regional support organizations, the Student Immigrant Movement. None of my photos made it into the final cut of the story, but them’s the breaks of the newspaper biz, right? So, taking advantage of the beauty of self-publishing, here are few of my selects from the afternoon I spent with these self-described “Dreamers.”

8.3.2010 — BOSTON — DREAM University participant Pete Shungu engages the discussion at a teach-in rally at the Massachusetts State House on Aug. 3, 2010. Activists were rallying in favor of the DREAM Act, which would grant a path to citizenship for undocumented students upon completion of higher education or enlistment in the military.

8.3.2010 — BOSTON — High school student Modeline Badio, 18, and other DREAM University participants prepare their signs for their rally in support of the DREAM Act outside the Massachusetts State House on Aug. 3, 2010. The activists were targeting Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown in particular, who has expressed mixed opinions on the DREAM Act.

8.3.2010 — BOSTON — A lone protester made several passes along Beacon Street in his minivan to counter the DREAM University teach-in at the Massachusetts State House on Aug. 3, 2010. The activists largely ignored the protester.

8.3.2010 — BOSTON — Maria Peniche, 19, tells the audience at the DREAM University teach-in about her struggles and goals as an undocmented student at the foot of the Massachusetts State House on Aug. 3, 2010. Softball State Champs

Continuing with my high school sports marathon day from Saturday, here’s a selection of photos from the MIAA Division 2 Softball championship between Hudson and Stoneham. It wasn’t exactly a close game, but what put Hudson ahead was their defense, which always makes for good photos.

There was also some interesting backstories on this team, too, from the starting pitcher celebrating her birthday and the catcher hitting her first career home run.

Lacrosse State Champs!

It was a big weekend in Worcester for the MIAA spring sports state finals, namely softball and lacrosse. I always enjoy photographing these events, especially at the high school level where the enthusiasm is genuine and the access is phenomenal. I always get a lot of requests from parents for prints, too, which is just some icing on the cake and little beer money in my pocket.

Beautiful weather, plenty of sun (my farmer’s tan proves it), and good action made for a rewarding, albeit hectic (covered three games for the Herald), afternoon.

Here’s a selection from the MIAA Division 1 Lacrosse championship:

6.19.2010 — WORCESTER, Mass. — Framingham midfielder Tanner Guarino loses possesion after a check from Longmeadow midfielder Stephanie Sabatini in the MIAA Division 1 final on June 19, 2010.

Hands Up

An outtake from a high school volleyball assignment I shot today.

5.27.2010 — NEWTON, Mass. — Needham at Newton South. MIAA Boys Volleyball South Sectional Semi-Finals.

For the record, I have never claimed to be good at photographing volleyball!

Seeing Red

What ended up being an epic weekend of work started with the Massachusetts GOP Convention Saturday at the DCU Center in Worcester. Politics, behind sports, is one of my favorite subjects to cover as a photojournalist. Sure, most of the access is mainly for canned press events and planned photo ops, but every now and then, you can sneak a candid, honest look at the people behind the race.

This particular event was a bit lighter in the second department — it was a convention after all — but it was a lot of fun, if not demanding work-wise, nonetheless.

The big story at this event was the race for the governor’s race nomination between Charlie Baker and underdog Christy Mihos. Here’s some images from the event:
