Lackluster, but effective

Thursday’s Red Sox-Diamondbacks game was a bit of a mixed bag. Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey was hit pretty hard throughout much of the game — four runs on eight hits — but was bailed out by timely hitting and smart baserunning from the offense. He kept the Sox in the game, which is really all you can ask of a starting pitcher, and walked away with the win.

Usually in tight games like this, there’s some defense that gives one team the edge. And of course, defense is always my favorite part of the game to photograph. So, with that in mind, here’s a brief selection of the photos from the game.

And of course, the night wouldn’t be complete with a little cross-team promotion. Unfortunately, Wally’s cheers did nothing to help the Celtics’ collapse in Game 7 on the West Coast.

Yo, KC

That headline’s a just a little shoutout to a former roommate of mine who has the unfortunate luck to be a Kansas City Royals fan. But he lucked out last Friday, when I got to witness an epic shelling of Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield at Fenway.

Not pretty.

Keep In Flight

One of my photojournalism mentors, John H. White, has a catch phrase: Keep In Flight. It’s his philosophy in life, and it could be interpreted a bunch of ways that I’ll let you dwell on for awhile.

Anyway, John made a habit out of photographing birds in flight, pretty much whenever he sees one, and he’d be sure to point out any birds in flight in our pictures when he taught my class in college.

This is my take on “Keep in Flight,” only I go for the biggest birds — Planes! I snapped this frame while waiting for Conan O’Brien to arrive at the Kennedy Library Foundation dinner earlier tonight. Conan showed up about 30 minutes late, so I had plenty of time to find ways to occupy myself…

5.23.2010 — BOSTON — A flight bound for Logan International Airport descends above the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Dorchester, Mass. on May 23, 2010.

Piano Man

Last week I received a request from local musician Todd Marston to take care of some promotional portraits for an upcoming residency at the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong. We were trying to blend Todd’s laid-back personality with the professional look that a high-end company like Mandarin Oriental would expect from its performers.

If you happen to be in Hong Kong from August through October, be sure to check out Todd. In the meantime, for you Boston-based folks, check out his band, Choose to Find.

Musical Chairs

I had the pleasure of spending some quality time with friends new and old at a small house party/show/jam session over the weekend. Some very talented musicians provided some excellent tunes while I fumbled my way through with the visuals.

Here’s a look at the festivities.

From the Archive – Nomah No More

In case you haven’t heard, the Red Sox beloved former shortstop Nomar Garciaparra announced his retirement today.

Here’s a photo from the archive that any Red Sox fan who followed the team in the late 90s should appreciate. One of the highlights of my first season with the Cubs came at the trade deadline, seeing a flood of new players in the dugout basically overnight. But Nomar in particular was a treat, since I got to see him bring to Chicago all the weird habits and mannerisms that I grew up watching — and imitating on occasion — back in Boston.

I got a kick out of this fan’s sign during Nomar’s first at-bat in a Cubs uniform:

8.1.04 - CHICAGO - Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra adjusts his gloves in his first at bat in a Cubs uniform while the Chicago fans remind him that he isn't in Boston anymore on Aug. 1, 2004.

Of course, the Red Sox went on to win the World Series, breaking the famous “Curse.” I ended up wearing my Nomar jersey through the front office at Wrigley the day after, and then-Cubs president Andy MacPhail had a good laugh about it.

Thanks, Nomar!

Contender

I started working on a project over the summer with a boxer named Silas Levy, a local up-and-coming heavyweight. The project kind of went to the back burner when things started to get real busy at the end of the summer (Gates-gate, Ted Kennedy’s death, etc.).

Silas recently won the Golden Gloves, the prestigious amateur boxing tournament and the starting point for a potential shot at the U.S. Olympic Team. Here’s a very loose edit of some time I spent with Silas at a fight and at one of his training sessions.

Congrats, Silas!

The Main Event

I spent my Saturday night last weekend photographing an event for the Boston Center for the Arts in the historic Cyclorama building in the South End. It was a fantastic space for an event billed as a night of fine dining with a little bit of spontaneous art thrown in as well. The main performers in the event were local chefs Barbara Lynch and Gordon Hamersley, who were set up in an “Iron Chef”-like kitchen, spotlit in the center of the hall.

Here are some photos from the event.

Sexy’s Back

May I present to you, the guy who put the D in a B.

2.5.2010 —€” CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —€” Justin Timberlake shows off Harvard University's Hasty Pudding Theater's 2010 Man of the Year award on Feb. 5, 2010.

Nothing fancy. A select press pool was allowed to photograph the roasting and awards presentation for the Hasty Pudding Theater’s Man of the Year at Harvard University, who just so happened to be Mr. Sexy’s Back, Justin Timberlake.

I was not part of that press pool, but I’m sure the whole thing will be on YouTube soon enough.

This photo is pretty much the only one without him sitting at a table. Them’s the breaks.

And for the record, Justin Timberlake is a weird-lookin’ dude in person.

COLLEGE!

It’s not every day that you get to dance in the middle of Boylston Street in Boston. But here they were, a bunch of Emerson College move-in “street team” members, dancing along to that awful Black Eyed Peas song
