It’s a weird feeling to see a high school kid you photographed four years ago play for the NCAA National Championship. Mostly, it’s a reminder of how fast time goes by, as well as how much has changed for me professionally since then.

Here are some pictures I made in 2006 for the Tampa Tribune of Shawn Vanzant, who played on the Butler team that eventually lost to Duke. It’s a great story for a kid who otherwise had some serious bad luck tossed his way. Wish the ending had a different outcome this time, though — But still, what a game!

11.20.2006 -- TAMPA -- Wharton's Shawn Vanzant drives past Brandon's Jeremy Jackson in Wharton's 64-49 home win on Nov. 20, 2006. Vanzant scored 24 points, with 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds in the win.

11.20.2006 -- TAMPA -- Wharton's Shawn Vanzant drives past Brandon's Marcus Morrison, right, and Jared Paul in Wharton's 64-49 home win on Nov. 20, 2006. Vanzant scored 24 points, with 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds in the win.

And a simple headshot for the preseason preview page.

Green Monsters

While the rest of the city had their minds set on Opening Night between the Red Sox and Yankees across town, it might have been easy to forget about the Celtics. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played, just in case anyone forgot.

The Celts have been trying to right the ship, as it were, trying to shake off the memory of a few crushing losses in their current six-game homestand — no easy task, with King LeBron James in town with the Cavaliers. The hometown team eventually pulled off the much-needed win, but it sure as hell wasn’t pretty — they ended up squeaking by, 117-113, after blowing a 22-point lead.

A playoff-caliber finish, and if the chippiness between the teams was any indication, the postseason should be quite exciting should they meet again. Here’s a few scenes from the game, with a looser edit available for viewing and licensing in my archive gallery.

Madness

It shouldn’t be much surprise to know that at this time of year, basketball is something that I get to photograph quite often. They don’t call it March Madness for nothing, after all.

Here are some photos from the second round of the MIAA High School Boys basketball playoffs, featuring a matchup between North Reading and Wayland.

A Rivalry

Here’s a benefit of being a photojournalist in the community where you grew up. Last Monday, I photographed a playoff basketball game involving my alma mater, Algonquin Regional High School, and our rivals, Westborough, for the MetroWest Daily News. (My contract with MWDN has a 1-week digital embargo, hence the late post).

Despite having a hapless ref trip over me in the beginning — an occupational hazard, but still better than that time I had my foot crushed by Glen “Big Baby” Davis — it was a phenomenal game with ARHS coming out on top to advance. They ended up getting knocked out the next round, but it was nice to see ARHS pull off the upset.

BU @ BC Women’s Hoops

Nothing like a cross-town rivalry to get the blood pumping. Unless it’s a women’s basketball game between BU and BC. Hockey’s the real rivalry between these two Commonwealth Avenue, as most people in the area are aware — this women’s basketball game wasn’t supposed to be much of a matchup on paper for the heavily favored BC.

BC ended up winning the game, though BU did keep things interesting with their 3-point shooting, which unfortunately doesn’t exactly translate to exciting action pictures.

Anyway, here’s some photos from the game:

Green Energy

Finally got around to photographing my first pro basketball, making my way over to the TD Garden for the Herald. The Celtics took on the Raptors, playing some sloppy, physical ball on their way to a 103-96 victory over their Canadian opponents.

Here’s some pics from the game, and a little PhotoShelter flash gallery.

Women’s Hoops – Wright State at Boston College

Just a few photos from Sunday’s women’s basketball game between Wright State and Boston College. (Factoid: Wright State is in Dayton, Ohio.)

Despite all the snow falling from the sky, I end up getting the stuff that keeps me indoors between this game and the New Kids on the Block concert. Go figure!

Miami at Boston College Hoops

Basketball is easily my second favorite sport to shoot, behind baseball of course. I got back into the swing of things today, covering the ACC opener between undefeated Miami and Boston College. It was a pretty active game on the floor, with a lot of steal attempts and loose balls. Not a whole lot happening in the lane, though, at least on my end.

Here’s some photos from the game:
