Running Scared?

So the last time I photographed anything from Martha Coakley’s U.S. Senate campaign, it was pretty much the last time she was out in public. Of course, when I last covered the campaign, Coakley was well on her way to winning the Democratic primary in a landslide. Since then? Well, she basically dropped off the face of the earth and didn’t make an appearance until last week.

Her rival, Scott Brown, has since closed the gap and is leading in several polls. I caught up with the Coakley campaign last night during a bunch of last-minute push events in anticipation of Tuesday’s election.

Politics and an Ed Markey battle cry is apparently no match for the video game being played by that kid on stage behind Coakley.

BU @ BC Women’s Hoops

Nothing like a cross-town rivalry to get the blood pumping. Unless it’s a women’s basketball game between BU and BC. Hockey’s the real rivalry between these two Commonwealth Avenue, as most people in the area are aware — this women’s basketball game wasn’t supposed to be much of a matchup on paper for the heavily favored BC.

BC ended up winning the game, though BU did keep things interesting with their 3-point shooting, which unfortunately doesn’t exactly translate to exciting action pictures.

Finally got around to photographing my first pro basketball, making my way over to the TD Garden for the Herald. The Celtics took on the Raptors, playing some sloppy, physical ball on their way to a 103-96 victory over their Canadian opponents.

Johnny New Year

The first baby of the new year is one of those stories that happens, well, every year. Yesterday, I was sent to get some photos of John Joseph Hayden, or Johnny, as his parents say they will call him. A ton of fun to shoot, and the family was great to be around. Read more about their story from the Herald.

The Anti- “Ball Drop”

A lot about this job is about feeding off the energy of the people you cover. I was out yesterday morning, New Year’s Day, to photograph the 106th annual L Street Brownie Jump, which is the oldest polar bear swim in the nation. These are some dedicated folks, jumping into frigid Dorchester Bay to ring in the new year. It’s hard not to get pumped up by seeing these people freeze their unmentionables off, as non-functional as you may be the day after New Year’s Eve.

Either way, there sure weren’t any balls dropping at this New Year’s tradition.
