New promo cards

Like many other recently laid off photojournalists out there, I’m stuck in a unique place. Being a newspaper photographer, I’ve built a career as a generalist — a jack of all trades, master of none. Basically, I do a lot of things well, but I’ve yet to define myself through a particular specialty.

Sure, there’s a lot of things that I like to photograph, but the important thing right now is getting paid. There’s a lot of competition.

Anyway, I’m trying to brand myself as a lifestyle and portrait photographer, really just to open myself up to a larger potential client base that I might have as a straight up photojournalist.

Here’s my latest attempt at a promo card:

I’m hoping to get these to the printer some time in the next few weeks, so any feedback anyone out there could give me would be much appreciated!

Happy Memorial Day!

It just wouldn’t be a Sunday before Memorial Day without me working a holiday event and dealing with an afternoon T-storm. Wait. Didn’t I leave Florida?

Two front pages in one week! I don’t even think I pulled that off at the Trib, and I worked there every day! Sure, there’s text on the photo, but I thought it was a pretty tastefully done cover.

Anyway, shout out to Alysis Richardson for getting a nice front-page blurb on her first day on the city desk.

The other white meat

So this is what I had for dinner tonight…

This is a smoked pork shoulder, which was then shredded into pulled pork and drizzled with some tangy Carolina-style sauce. I love Memorial Day BBQs, especially when the food is this good.

Got myself a nice front page spread off the “Grown Ups” set on Monday. Walking around Southboro yesterday, I noticed that the Herald was either sold out or down to the last copy at a few places. Not too shabby!

Haven’t had a chance to pick up today’s paper, but I doubt anything I got from yesterday’s shoot got anything near the treatment I got from Monday’s stuff. Either way, nice to put my hometown on the map!

For those about to rock…

I guess I wasn’t done digging through my archive, because I went through last night and dug up some old concert photos from my time in Tampa.

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love music. I don’t function without music playing for a good part of the day. Live music, in particular, is what I like to spend my time and money on. Lucky for me in Tampa, I had a lot of friends in bands or otherwise intimately involved in the local scene, so I was never a stranger at most of the local venues.

And with the number of hobbyists with DSLRs at smaller club shows, it’s no wonder why — music is fun to photograph. It’s not particularly challenging. Everything is reasonably lit for you… most of the time. the performers are giving you good emotion… most of the time. Here’s a one from some friends of mine, The Beauvilles. Rock music from Tampa, Florida:

9/11/08 - TAMPA - The Beauvilles Shawn Kyle performs at Crowbar in Tampa, Fla. on Sept. 11, 2008.

Shawn, the lead singer of the band, has been a friend and a soccer teammate of mine up until I moved, but he’s never let me down with the photo ops.

Of course, an arena show every now and then is always fun! There’s no substitute for a decent band melting the faces of 10k+ people in a packed arena. Easily the best band I’ve shot in arena setting is Taking Back Sunday. Adam Lazzara does not disappoint when it comes to stage presence:

Hollywood to Southborough

I never thought I’d be playing the paparazzi in my hometown of Southborough, a sleepy little town about 20 miles west of Boston. But, stranger things have happened in my photo career.

Get Adobe Flash player

Adam Sandler and his buddies scouted the town a few months back for a movie called “Grown Ups,” settling on the Pilgrim Church on Main Street to shoot a funeral scene that sets up the film. Judging from the way Rob Schneider was dressed, I’m guessing it’s a comedy.

I went up there to get some shots of the stars on the first day of filming yesterday for the Herald. Not a bad gig, as I had been planning on checking it out at some point this week. Filming took place inside the church, due to some cloudy weather, so not a lot to be had until they came outside.

Most of the stars were very gracious and humble, and a there were  a lot of easy pictures to be had. Schneider in particular was a little too happy to see me, but hey, at least he wasn’t throwing a phone at me, Russell Crowe-style.

Herald’s got me going back a few times later this week. I’ll probably check it out later today and then get a haircut.

Shoot the Moon

This will probably be the last of the shots I post from my Tampa Tribune archive. I was coming back from lunch with a co-worker of mine, and we both saw the moon low in the sky with some buzzards circling the building. Window washers, too!

Being the geeks that we are, we had a little “shootout,” with one of our editors being the judge of the final product. I think he ended up calling it a draw. Spineless! ;)

I really need to start producing some fresh, meaningful work at some point!

Football by any other name

In honor of the outdoor soccer season starting back up here in Massachusetts, here’s a little soccer sportrait from Tampa:

11.20.07 - TAMPA - Senior Matt Montgomery, central midfielder for Wharton High School.

Unlike here in the Northeast, soccer is a winter sport down in Florida. The light fades fast in the winter, so this was pretty much at pitch black before one of their games. Wanted to go with a little more of a commercial look on this one, went with the header because this kid had a walking boot on his foot, which he injured the last game.

So, keeping it timely. Got my game Friday night in Brighton!

Oink Oink

Just getting home from a very long day with the Herald. Started the day off with a fun assignment, the annual “Blessing of the Animals” at the Old South Church in Back Bay. Kind of a quirky event where the pastors of the church bless local pets and the Boston Police Department horses, and definitely easy.

Here’s Blarney!

But then, the story of the day — Swine Flu. Judging from all the comments and status updates I’ve seen from my other journalism friends, I guess I was due to cover a swine flu story. This time, I was sent to hang out at the Harvard Medical School, where nine students were diagnosed with the strain as of Saturday.

For the most part, the students weren’t concerned. A few even laughed it off when the topic was even mentioned. I guess if you’re going to get sick with swine flu, there’s hardly a better place in the world than Harvard Medical School.

Yet, the reporter and I found a lot of students reluctant to go on the record about the incidents, citing demerits issued by the school regarding comments to the media. This sounded absolutely ludicrous, and I can’t imagine an institution of higher education with the caliber of Harvard resorting to such scare techniques. If anything, I’d expect them to be spinning the hell out of a story like this. Now, they’ve got active strains of the virus to study, on campus, and their treatment of the infected patients could stand as a model for the rest of the world. It’s not that hard of a sell! Yet, for some reason, much of the Harvard Medical School student body seemed frightful about the consequences of discussing their lack of concern and Harvard’s proactive response to the outbreak. Oh well. What can you do?

Here’s a shot from the fishing expedition:

5.2.2009 - BOSTON - First-year Harvard medical students were engaging in regular social activity Saturday, May 2, 2009, days after swine flu was reported on the Medical School campus. The students, whose classes were canceled, said they were not overly concerned about the incidents on campus.

Foodie. Foodie. Yum.

In an effort to expand my revenue opportunities, I just spent the last few hours sorting through my archives digging up food photos. I always find it healthy to go through the old stuff I’ve shot — in this case, the last three years of newspaper work — more so to see how I’ve grown as a photographer rather than reminisce about all the crappy photos I’ve taken along the way!

My fellow photographers at the Tampa Tribune and I used to gripe a lot about our assignments. If there’s one thing journalists like to do, it’s complain. They’d always come up with creative names for food assignments, like “food aerials” or “plate mugs.” But secretly, I actually loved shooting food, or at least I did when I started to figure out how to do it!

I always appreciated the challenge of trying to make a dish look appetizing. Granted, the chefs at some of the fancier places made that real easy for me, but once I started bringing in lights and reflectors and stuff — you can tell the chefs hadn’t ever taken any food photos like that before — my appreciation for food photography really started to grow.

So, without further ado, here are some of the shots I dug out of the archive:

3.19.08 - TAMPA - Chocolate Torte at 725 South | a bistro.

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’ve got a huge sweet tooth. Seriously, don’t interrupt me when I’m digging into a triple chocolate mousse at my favorite tapas restaurant in Tampa. I will cut you! :)

But we can’t forget the main course. So here it is, a filet mignon topped with a lobster tail. Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

As a full-time freelancer now, I’m always on the look out for additional photography opportunities. In fact, I just dropped some dough on a new 100mm Macro to really get serious about my food photography. I come from a family of chefs, from the restaurant-owning uncle, to my grandpa the cook, and my mad-scientist chef of a dad, so this just seems natural to me!

If anyone knows any restaurant owners/chefs in the Boston area who are in need of any food photography, send them my way!
